Hwang Chi Yeul made his debut as a singer in 2007, releasing two albums, Chi Yeul and Five Senses. However, his journey to success was far from straightforward. Throughout his twenties, he took on various part-time jobs while working as a vocal trainer, persevering until late 2014.

His breakthrough came with his appearance on the reality singing programme I Can See Your Voice, where he captivated audiences with a heartfelt rendition of Im Jae Bum’s “Confession”. Looking back, he described the programme as a turning point in his life – one that showed him a glimmer of hope when he wanted to give up on music.

During the press conference, Chi Yeul reflected on the most challenging periods of his career, describing them as times when his “hopes and dreams wavered”. What kept him going, however, was the people he wanted to protect.

He has never thought that it would be possible for him to have concerts in so many different countries, and is extremely thankful for all love he received through programmes like ‘I Am A Singer’.

While singing is an essential part of his identity as an artist, Chi Yeul believes that variety shows offer another avenue for fans to discover different sides of him. He expressed his openness to exploring all kinds of programmes, including sports-related shows, adding that he would be more than happy to take on new experiences and challenges.

So, what are the three things Chi Yeul cannot live without? He answered almost immediately, “Computer – because I have to compose music. Piano. And my fans (laughs).”

Looking ahead, Chi Yeul’s first solo concert in South Korea is set to take place at Seoul Olympic Hall on 24 and 25 June. He described the concert as a particularly meaningful opportunity, especially as it has been 10 years since the release of his last album. He also expressed that he is honoured to do this (concert) as a singer, and promised to give his best and create unforgettable memories for his fans.

Hwang Chi Yeul’s Mini-Concert in Singapore drew a total of 3,500 fans, many of whom travelled from across the region to catch him live. Fans from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and even the States flew in specially to watch him live. Was it worth it? Yes, definitely a night to remember.

The audience was treated to lively performances of popular hits, including BIGBANG’s “BANG BANG BANG” and J.Y. Park’s “Honey”, with Chi Yeul showing off his slick dance moves along the way. Over the course of the two-hour concert, he also made a conscious effort to connect with the audience in Mandarin, occasionally turning to his translator for a little help.

The singer’s sense of humour is also one not to be missed. His chirpy personality filled the concert hall, and he infected everyone with his laughter.

One of the evening’s more amusing moments came during a game segment in which Chi Yeul was challenged to identify different fruits while blindfolded. Rather than simply guessing, he began picking up the fruits from the plate and eating them.

When handed a tissue by his translator, he casually set it aside, opting instead to wipe his hands on the tablecloth before proceeding to use his denim outerwear. His nonchalant antics drew surprised reactions from the audience, prompting him to quip in Mandarin, “It’s alright, I’m from the village” – sending the concert hall into fits of laughter.

Chi Yeul also poked fun at his language abilities, remarking, “Chinese is difficult, not easy. Korean is also not easy. And English is even more difficult….” Despite admitting that he was “a tad bad at english”, he started singing a few english songs that garnered approval from fans.

The concert ended on a high note with a remixed version of Wang Lee Hom’s “Change Me” – we can’t help but feel bitter that the concert had ended.

With a brand-new mini album, Be Ordinary, slated for release this June, Chi Yeul is set to return with more of his signature honey-smooth vocals. Make sure to keep a lookout!
