At the recent Disney Content Showcase in Singapore, a thrilling slate of upcoming dramas was revealed, offering viewers a fresh mix of suspense, intrigue, and emotional depth. From high-stakes thrillers to complex character-driven stories, these six shows promise to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Whether you’re drawn to gripping crime mysteries or emotional journeys of growth, Disney+ is set to deliver some of the most exciting dramas of the year. Here’s a closer look at what’s to come:
1. Light Shop (Premieres 4 December, now available on Disney+) –
A Haunting Journey of Redemption
Light Shop beckons viewers into a supernatural thriller where lives converge at an enigmatic light shop tucked away in a shadowy alley. Jun Jihyun stars as Jung Wonyoung, the reserved shop owner harboring untold secrets, while Park Boyoung plays Kwon Jiyoung, a compassionate yet conflicted nurse, embodying the tension between life and death. Writer Kang Pull, renowned for Moving, revisits his webtoon from 13 years ago, adding richer lore and fresh plotlines for the drama adaptation.
The creative team shared fascinating insights during the press conference. Park Boyoung reflected on playing a nurse for the third time, emphasizing how this role departs from her past portrayals, delving into the eerie and emotional. Jun Jihyun, a self-professed fan of Kang Pull, revealed his meticulous preparation, including deep discussions about character motivations to ensure authenticity. Despite their characters never meeting, their chemistry resonates onscreen thanks to a seamless pre-production process.
Director Kim Heewon, a renowned actor himself, expressed nervous excitement, transitioning from acting roles to directing this ambitious project. He lauded the cast’s dedication, highlighting how their interpretations elevated the narrative’s emotional depth. 2. Unmasked (Coming January 2025) – A Spirited Take on Truth and Justice
Unmasked promises a whirlwind of intrigue, comedy, and heart. The story follows a group of investigative journalists led by Oh Soryong (Kim Hyesoo), who are thrust into a decades-old mystery to save their careers. Jung Sungil stars as her partner, Han Do, a character worlds apart from his intense persona in The Glory. Together, they unravel a cold case involving a famous actor who vanished without a trace.
Kim Hyesoo shared how she approached her strong-willed character with humour and wit who is “crazy for justice”. She revealed challenges during filming, from reshooting scenes after pulling a muscle to balancing the show’s comedic tone with heavy themes like misinformation. Jung Sungil recounted a hilarious moment when a mouse fell on his head during filming, likening it to a scene from Ratatouille.
Thematically rich and brimming with personality, Unmasked offers a compelling blend of mystery, laughter, and heart. Each episode promises to surprise, making it a standout addition to the Disney+ lineup.
3. Low Life – Grit and Greed in a 1970s Treasure Hunt
Low Life is more than a story about treasure—it’s a gripping exploration of human ambition set against the vibrant backdrop of 1970s Korea. When Oh Gwanseok (Ryu Seungryong), a fisherman with a weary soul, discovers a long-lost fortune underwater, his nephew Oh Heedong (Yang Sejong) sees a chance to escape his struggles. Together, they dive into the treasure hunt, but as word of the fortune spreads, they find themselves facing rivals and their own darker instincts.
At the press conference, the team offered glimpses into the drama’s production and its heart. Director Kang Yunsung, famous for Big Bet, revealed that recreating the era was a labour of love, requiring meticulous attention to everything from wardrobe to going out of the way and shooting at Shinan Getbol (mudflat)—a stunning UNESCO site in —to capture the period’s atmosphere. Yang Sejong expressed his gratitude for working alongside seasoned actors, noting how Ryu Seungryong, the “life of the set,” kept spirits high despite the intense nature of the scenes. Lim Soojung shared how she embraced her role as a cunning sponsor of the treasure-digging crew, crafting a multi-faceted character whom she had very much enjoyed living in her shoes.
The show’s gritty realism, combined with the fascinating family dynamics, promises an exciting watch that goes beyond the treasure—it’s about the people who risk everything to find it.
4. Hyper Knife (Coming March 2025) – When Ambition and Authority Collide
Get ready for a powerful exploration of ambition and conflict in Hyper Knife, where two doctors with vastly different statuses find themselves clashing in unexpected ways. Park Eunbin stars as Jung Seok, a determined mentee navigating the demanding world of surgery, while Sul Kyunggu takes on the role of Choi Deokhee, her skilled but exacting mentor. In Knock Off, Kim Soohyun plays Kim Sungjoon, a man whose life is destroyed by the financial crisis, and who climbs his way to the top of the counterfeit goods market. His character isn’t looking for love—he’s driven purely by the desire to survive, a stark contrast to Kim Soohyun’s previous roles. Alongside him, Cho Boah portrays Song Hyejung, a woman with her own hidden motivations in the dangerous world of knock-offs.
Kim Soohyun revealed that his approach to playing Sungjoon is to keep his emotions raw and immediate, a choice that will keep viewers riveted as Sungjoon navigates a murky world of deceit. Cho Boah, meanwhile, spoke about the complexity of her character, saying she had to find ways to relate to a role that isn’t as outwardly “likeable” as some of her previous ones. But through careful research and character study, she was able to bring Hyejung to life in a way that feels real and relatable.
Behind the scenes, the chemistry between the two leads was electric. The director mentioned that the two brought unique energy to their roles and teased that while romance plays a small part (“maybe about 30%?”), the real heart of the story lies in the characters’ ambition and survival instincts.
