OMNISCIENT READER: THE PROPHECY IS ALMOST LIKE K-FANTASY SQUID GAME – AND WE’RE OBSESSED

A promotional event for the film 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy' featuring a large screen display and a group of six cast members on stage, with promotional details visible.

When Clarissa Chew, 32, heard that the webtoon she read a year ago was being adapted into a film, she was undoubtedly excited. And when she saw who the main cast was going to be? She was ecstatic.

It was announced that the legendary Lee Min Ho and leading man Ahn Hyo Seop were cast in this action-packed fantasy epic, helmed by director Kim Byung Woo and produced by Won Dong-Yeon.

Like many avid fans, Clarissa queued early on multiple devices the moment tickets dropped at 3PM on 21 July – and luckily for her, she snagged a pair of tickets just minutes before the premiere sold out in just 18 minutes.

Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy had its movie premiere in Singapore on 29 July at Vivocity, Golden Village. It is reported that Singapore is the first and only international promotional stop outside of South Korea.

After watching the movie ourselves, one thing’s for sure: whether you’re a long-time fan of the webtoon or simply here for the stars, Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy has plenty to offer. With stunning visuals, immersive sound design, and a moving portrayal of human struggle and emotion, the film takes us on a gripping journey.

At the centre of this film is a regular, relatable office worker who suddenly finds himself in the role of a ‘prophet’ – and all because he’s the only one in the world who’s read an obscure web novel that seems to be predicting what happens next.

So, here are 5 reasons why we think this show should be next on your watchlist:

1. If you loved Squid Game, you’ll love this

Much like Squid Game, Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy gamifies human survival – but with an addictive fantasy twist. As society collapses and more monsters emerge, the characters are forced to complete deadly “scenarios” to stay alive. It’s high-stakes, brutal, and thrillingly unpredictable. And just like Squid Game, the portrayal of these scenarios becomes a mirror for humanity’s struggle, exposing not just the will to survive but also the cracks in our systems and morals.

2. One of Korea’s first major action-fantasy films

This is not your typical Korean movie launch. Omniscient Reader dives boldly into the action-fantasy territory, which is still a relatively new genre for Korean cinema – and we think that the movie nails it. It’s giving big end-of-the-world energy, world-building potential, and hero’s journey all grounded in Korean urban realism.

3. A star-studded cast

Yes, Lee Min Ho and Ahn Hyo Seop are the leading actors, but the film also features BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, NaNa, and Chae Soo Bin. In the movie, each side character brings charisma and complexity to their roles- and let’s be real, seeing them all in one film is a total visual feast.

A group of five individuals stands together in a dimly lit urban environment. They display a range of expressions, suggesting tension or concern. The group includes a soldier in military attire, a man in a suit, a child wearing a helmet and jacket, and two women, one in a long colorful coat and the other in casual wear.

 4. Humour that hits

Despite the apocalyptic setting, the film doesn’t forget to breathe by giving us comedic relief that is woven in between scenes to balance the tension. It comes in the form of hilarious character banter and cute absurd moments featuring the little kid, Lee Gil‑yeong, who is portrayed by child actor Kwon Eun Seong. Be prepared to laugh, gasp, and quiver – all within the same movie.

A young child wearing a helmet sits on the ground, appearing distressed, while people move quickly in the background, some lying on the ground amidst scattered trash and debris.

5. Ahn Hyo Seop’s action breakthrough

If you already adore Ahn Hyo Seop from his K-dramas, brace yourself – this is a side of him you haven’t seen. He brings both physical intensity and surprising emotional depth, especially in scenes where his character grapples with the survival of his new friends. It’s raw, gripping, and dare we say a star-in-the-making for the big screen.

Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is now showing in cinemas and if the sold-out premiere is any sign, you might want to grab your tickets fast.

Big thank you to Golden Village for inviting us to the premiere!
